Medigap in New Mexico

Medigap plans in New Mexico help pay Original Medicare's out-of-pocket costs. Starting January 1, 2027, Senate Bill 21 lets New Mexicans 65+ who have Medigap switch to a plan of equal or lesser value each birthday month without medical underwriting.

Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plans help pay for out-of-pocket healthcare costs that Original Medicare does not cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These standardized plans are sold by private insurance companies and are identified by letters (A, B, D, G, K, L, M, N). In New Mexico, Medigap enrollees benefit from strong state-level consumer protections.

Medigap Plans Available in New Mexico

Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government, meaning Plan G from one insurer provides the same benefits as Plan G from another. The differences between insurers are mainly the premium price, customer service, and claims processing.

New Mexico Medigap Protections

New for 2027: Under Senate Bill 21, starting January 1, 2027, Medigap policyholders age 65 and older get a yearly window of at least 60 days, opening on the first day of their birthday month, to switch to a Medigap plan of equal or lesser value without medical underwriting. It does not apply to people who do not already have Medigap.

Separately, federal law gives everyone a one-time 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period that begins when you are both enrolled in Part B and age 65 or older. During this window, insurers cannot deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on pre-existing conditions. However, if you did not have prior creditable coverage, an insurer can apply a waiting period of up to 6 months before covering a pre-existing condition.
