Telehealth & Rural Health

Through December 31, 2027, Medicare covers most telehealth visits from home anywhere in the U.S., under temporary rules Congress has extended; after that, unless Congress acts again, most non-mental-health telehealth would return to the older rural-only rules. Some Medicare Advantage plans also offer extra telehealth benefits, which can help in rural counties with few specialists; they vary by plan.

New Mexico's vast geography and rural communities make telehealth an essential component of healthcare access. Medicare has expanded telehealth coverage significantly, and some Medicare Advantage plans offer broader virtual care benefits.

Medicare Telehealth Coverage

Medicare covers a growing list of telehealth services, including:

  • Office visits with your doctor or specialist via video
  • Mental health counseling and therapy sessions
  • Chronic care management check-ins
  • Follow-up visits after hospital discharge
  • Certain preventive health screenings
  • Physical therapy and occupational therapy evaluations

Telehealth in Rural New Mexico

For beneficiaries in rural counties like Catron, Harding, De Baca, and Guadalupe, telehealth can bridge the gap when the nearest specialist is hours away. Medicare has relaxed many of the geographic restrictions that previously limited telehealth to rural areas, making virtual visits available to beneficiaries statewide.

Medicare Advantage Telehealth Benefits

Medicare Advantage plans may offer telehealth benefits beyond what Original Medicare covers, such as:

  • Virtual primary care visits
  • 24/7 nurse hotlines
  • Virtual urgent care
  • Remote patient monitoring for chronic conditions
  • Telehealth behavioral health services

Extra benefits vary by plan and county, may have limits and costs, and not every plan offers them. Check a plan's Summary of Benefits or Evidence of Coverage. Compare plans in your county.
